Tom Ripley receives a letter from Herbert Greenleaf, in which he learns that Herbert Greenleaf's attempts to persuade Dick to return home have failed.Meanwhile, Dick Greenleaf receives a letter from his father telling him to watch out for Tom.Dick Greenleaf offers to take Tom on a trip to Sanremo.They rent a boat and Dick Greenleaf tells Tom that he, Maggie and Freddie Miles will be spending Christmas together in Cortina d'Ampezzo, but not him.Tom beat Dick to death with an oar, then tied him to the anchor and threw him out.Wearing Dick's ring, Tom Ripley left San Remo.
