Shen Jialan is the eldest granddaughter of Bachelor Shen. She grew up in a scholarly family. She accompanied her mother to offer incense, and on her way back, she met Xu Wanquan and his wife carrying their sick daughter to seek medical treatment. The Xu family was a slave. After their daughter Xu Lanxiang became seriously ill, the family was kicked out by the master's family, who could not even pay for medical treatment.Jialan gave them ten taels of silver, and seeing that Lan Xiang's clothes were thin, he gave her his spare clothes.

When Jialan reached the age of hairpin, she had already been engaged to Lin Jinqi, the grandson of Lin's parents, but the two had not met yet.Mother arranged a tea party and planned to invite the Lin family to visit to discuss the marriage. On the appointed day, the Lin family did not come, and all they received was a letter of divorce. The situation in the court has changed. The old masters of the Shen and Lin families had advised to withdraw the vassal. Now that the vassal king has ascended the throne, the old matters are being investigated again.

The Lin family chose to obey the new emperor and resigned and returned to Jinling after condemning the deposed emperor in order to save the whole family. However, Mr. Shen refused to go against his will. In the end, the Shen family was convicted, the men were executed, and the women were taken to the Jiaofang Division. The women of the Shen family did not want to be humiliated there, so the mother and daughter of the second wife took poison first, and the rest of the female family members also committed suicide one after another.Since there was no stool on which to rest her feet, the old lady leaned down and let her daughters-in-law step on her to pass away.Jialan's mother sent her mother-in-law away, and in the end only she and her daughter were left.

The mother wanted Jialan to go with her family, but found that her daughter was unconscious and still breathing, so she couldn't do anything. At this time, Xu Wanquan and his wife, who were working in the Jiaofang Division, arrived.Their biological daughter Lanxiang has died of illness. Thinking of the help that the Shen family's mother and daughter had given, the couple decided to take the risk and replace Jialan with their deceased daughter.Jialan's mother then committed suicide. The Jiaofang Bureau verified the number of people and identities and reported it, so Jialan was able to escape.

Jialan woke up again and was already on the boat leaving Beijing. After watching her family members die, she could not accept living alone and still wanted to die.The Xu family hurriedly stopped her and told her that once her identity was exposed, everyone would die.Xu Wanquan also handed over the yellow paper left by his mother. It was originally a piece of paper Jialan prayed for for his parents, but now it had a "living" word written in blood by his mother. Her mother tried her best to save her life, but Jialan didn't have the courage to take the road ahead of her.
