《Tenzing》On Apple TV: Hiddleston, Dafoe recreate the journey to the summit of Mount Everest in 1953

On May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary completed the first human summit of Mount Everest.73 years later, the film centered on Tenzing - Tenzing - (tentative translation) has been launched on Apple TV on October 16, after being screened in some theaters in the United States on October 9.

The film is directed by Australian director Jennifer Peedom and stars Genden Phuntsok as Tenzin, Tom Hiddleston as Hillary, and Willem Dafoe as John Hunter, leader of the British expedition.Caitriona Balfe plays the expedition secretary Jill Henderson, and Thinley Lhamo plays Tenzin's first wife Dawa.

In the story of the movie, Tenzing is an extremely talented Sherpa climber. His wife Dawa encouraged him, and his secretary Jill became his ally. The two helped him win Hunter's recognition: Tenzing should participate in the climb as a member of the British mountaineering team and obtain a position corresponding to his ability. In the eyes of Western climbers, “Everest” is a peak waiting to be conquered; “Chomolungma”, which Tenzin admires, is the sacred mother goddess.

The dangers of climbing are intertwined with the background, class and aspirations within the team. The altitude is getting higher and higher. On the last stretch of the road, two climbers from different situations rely on mutual respect and trust to move forward. For Tenzin, reaching the summit carries both a long-standing dream and a spiritual calling.

With the launch of streaming media, Apple TV released five promotional short films of about 30 seconds. They respectively emphasize achievement and risk, making history together, Hunter's determination to lead the climb, Hiddleston's Hillary, and the main cast. The short films released one after another from October 5th to 16th finally settled on the slogan “Extraordinary achievements require taking huge risks”.

This is Pidom's first feature film. She has shot documentary films in Nepal many times before, and has directed Solo, Miracle on Everest, Sherpa, Mountain, River and Deeper. This time she adapted the real summit event into a feature film, with the script written by Luke Davis.

《 Tenzing 》 screened at Telluride and the Toronto Film Festival this fall.Film critic Alex Billington listed it as one of his favorite movies of 2026, praising the realism of its climbing scenes and saying that the film makes people feel the determination that supported Tenzing and Hillary to reach the summit.
