Episode 2

In the deep ocean of psychology, every criminal's mind is a unique island waiting to be explored. When Holden and Bill came to Santa Cruz, California to continue their teaching and psychological research trip, they met a special “Island”-Ed Kemper.

Ed Kemper, a name that hides a shocking crime. As a teenager, he was imprisoned in a mental hospital for killing his grandparents; as an adult, he committed the crime of raping and murdering six young girls, and even poisoned his own mother, humiliating and killing her in extreme ways.she.However, this criminal, labeled as a "beast" by society, has become a rare research resource in Holden's eyes.

Holden's first meeting with Ed broke people's stereotypes of criminals.Ed is not vicious, he has a kind face and is approachable. During the communication with Holden, he even helped Holden get a sandwich for breakfast. With Ed like this, one can't help but think: What made him embark on such an extreme path?

In an in-depth conversation, Ed revealed his inner world to Holden. He believes that the reason why he became a murderer was not because of impulse, but because he had been humiliated and despised by his mother for a long time.Since he was a child, his mother used vulgar language to humiliate him and regarded him as a person who accomplished nothing. This long-term emotional torture made Ed finally burst out of his years of pent-up anger during a dispute with his mother as an adult, humiliating and killing his mother in an extreme way.

Ed’s story allows us to see the profound impact of family environment on children’s growth.A mother who humiliates her child from a young age may indeed make the child violent and despicable when he grows up.Ed believed that his crimes were entirely due to his mother's teachings and had nothing to do with him personally.Although this view is extreme, it also reminds us that the health of the family environment plays a vital role in the growth of children.

However, just as Holden and Bill delved into Ed's psychology, they encountered another difficult case.An elderly and kind grandmother was brutally beaten and her pet dog was killed.Judging from the crime, it was most likely the work of a local teenager who was drunk.Faced with such a case, Holden is even more convinced that studying the psychological characteristics of criminals can effectively help solve the case.

Therefore, Holden proposed to his superiors a series of plans to interrogate murderers, hoping to get support. However, the superiors were so annoyed by the two agents' private interrogation of Ed Campbell that they even wanted to punish them with demotions. After Bill's intervention, the superiors finally accepted Holden's plan, but asked for it to be kept secret and moved their offices to the basement.

Despite the difficulties they faced, Holden and Bill's determination did not waver. They know that there are complex psychological motives behind every criminal. Only by deeply understanding these motives can we better protect society and uphold justice. And Ed Campbell is an important chapter in their journey of exploring the psychological world.
